About Spencer Labs

A small software studio that builds custom applications for small companies, advises on the systems they already run, and publishes products of its own.

What we are

Spencer Labs is a software development and consulting company. We do three things: we build custom web applications for clients, we advise businesses on the technology they are buying and running, and we develop and sell our own subscription products — HostRev being the first.

We are deliberately small. That is a constraint we have chosen rather than a stage we are trying to grow out of. It means we take on fewer projects than we are asked to, and it means the person who scopes your project is the person who builds it.

Why the studio exists

Small companies are badly served by both ends of the software market. Off-the-shelf tools are built for someone else's business and require yours to bend around them. Custom development is priced and structured for enterprises, with discovery phases that produce slide decks instead of software.

The gap between those is where most real work sits: a booking system that matches how a business actually books, a portal that a specific set of clients will actually use, an integration that removes an hour of daily re-typing. That work is not glamorous and it is not enormous, and it is what we do.

How we operate

• Quoted before it starts. Every engagement has a written price and a defined deliverable before any work begins.
• Billed against delivered work. Milestones are invoiced when the deliverable is running and you have seen it.
• Handed over completely. Source code, documentation, and credentials are yours. We do not build dependencies on ourselves.
• Cancellable without friction. Month-to-month subscriptions, cancel by email, no retention call.
• Honest about fit. We turn down work that an existing product would do better, and we say so early.

Who we work with

Our clients are local service businesses, real estate professionals, vacation rental operators, and independent professional services firms — companies with real operational complexity and no internal development team. HostRev came directly out of that work, which is how we know the problems it solves are real.

What we do not do

We are not a legal, tax, or accounting adviser, and nothing we deliver should be treated as advice in those areas. We do not process or hold funds on behalf of our clients or their customers. We do not resell customer data, and we do not build systems whose business model depends on doing so.
